Bartle’s taxonomy of player types provides a highly effective framework for analyzing player engagement, particularly in a complex game like Path of Exile.

Explorer type players, who prioritize discovering a game's world, lore, mechanics, and systems, find immense depth in this title. The game features a massive passive skill tree and a system where various skills are socketed directly into equipment. Since these skills are remarkably abundant, the system presents players with countless unique combinations to experiment with. Furthermore, beyond its intricate mechanics, Path of Exile offers a satisfying narrative progression, diverse environments, and compelling bosses, making it a highly attractive experience for Explorers.

Achievers focus primarily on accomplishments and challenges within the game. In Path of Exile, dedicated tabs explicitly display the milestones players can earn. There are 123 achievements available across any league, alongside objectives specific to individual leagues. While these league challenges generally appear more difficult to accomplish, a significant portion of both categories essentially require players to perform routine gameplay activities in a slightly more specific manner. Milestones such as reaching a certain level or defeating a particular boss with a designated class are quite common. Additionally, there are notorious achievements within the community, such as No Stones Unturned, which requires players to click on every single lore text object scattered across the maps. For players who do not inherently lean towards the Achiever profile, these types of milestones may not seem particularly exciting when there is already an overwhelming amount of content left to discover.

Socializer types consist of players who prefer playing with friends, seeking social interaction just as much as the gameplay itself, and enjoying discussions about the titles they play. Since it is entirely possible to play the campaign cooperatively from start to finish, the game serves as an enjoyable option for this demographic. Furthermore, Path of Exile boasts a massive player base and an internal economic system that closely mirrors real life economics. Items known as Chaos Orbs are utilized essentially as a primary currency for trading, and this trading economy becomes crucial for progressing and acquiring desired gear. Therefore, Socializers have ample opportunities not only for cooperative play but also for communicating, interacting, and discussing the market with the broader community.

Finally, Killer players are generally those who thrive on competition and take pleasure in dominating or sabotaging their peers. Path of Exile does offer a PVP mode that might attract this type of player, but since the title does not possess a traditional MMORPG structure, combat between players is strictly confined to designated PVP arenas. Consequently, there is no opportunity to attack others while progressing through the main world. However, if a player's mindset is focused on destroying absolutely everything in sight rather than strictly targeting other players, Path of Exile acts as a quintessential ARPG. Eradicating the massive hordes of enemies the game constantly throws at players, especially in the later stages, can certainly satisfy that inherent desire for destruction.
