Project Overview: Sown in Silence (Working Title)

  • Genre: Narrative Adventure / Genre-Blend (Farming Sim + Metroidvania)
  • The Design Challenge: Effectively juxtaposing the "Cozy" gameplay loops of farming and dating simulators with the existential dread of cosmic horror, creating a gameplay experience that feels both familiar and deeply unsettling.
  • Core Concept: Players live a dual life: by day, they manage a farm and build relationships in a seemingly peaceful village; by night, they explore an ancient, shifting temple to communicate with a cosmic entity that challenges their reality.
  • My Role: Concept & System Designer
  • Inspirations: H.P. Lovecraft Stories, Stardew Valley, Metroid

Dual-Loop Systems: Routine vs. Revelation

The gameplay is structured around two contrasting loops that feed into each other to build narrative and mechanical momentum.

OutcomePhaseActivity
Provides resources and Mental Stability (required to safely explore the temple).Day (Cozy)Farming, gathering, socializing with NPCs.
Unlocks narrative revelations and "Forbidden Knowledge" that recontextualizes the day-cycle events.Night (Cosmic)Metroidvania-style labyrinth exploration.

Metroidvania Progression: "Knowledge as Power"

Instead of traditional physical upgrades, progression is tied to narrative discovery and perspective.

  • Reality Shifting: Gaining forbidden knowledge from the Entity changes the player's perception. This reveals hidden paths in previously explored areas (both in the temple and the village), effectively "opening" the map without needing physical keys.
  • Atmospheric Escalation: As players reach deeper layers of the temple, the "cozy" farming loop begins to erode. Crops mutate, weather becomes unnatural, and NPC dialogue warps, providing visual and mechanical feedback of the encroaching horror.

Narrative Asymmetry & The Entity

The heart of the game is the player's relationship with the Great Old One residing within the temple.

  • Cryptic Communication: The Entity does not offer traditional quests. It communicates through abstract puzzles, environmental shifts, and psychological tests that the player must interpret.
  • Tragic NPC Dynamics: As the player grows closer to the Entity, their perception of the village changes. Hidden cultist ties are revealed, turning a simple "dating sim" into a high-stakes psychological drama where the people you helped might be part of a cosmic cycle.
